Published Sep 03, 2020Back in March, when everyone was hoping that coronavirus would quickly blow over, beloved TV quiz show Jeopardy! got rid of their live studio audience before quickly shutting down production, forcing us to watch reruns and other notable moments to get our question-asking fix. Now, the quiz show juggernaut is set to return with new episodes on September 14, with a new, distance-friendly set and a familiar face joining the team — Jeopardy! legend Ken Jennings.
While Alex Trebek will still remain the show's host, as he has since 1984, Jennings — who went on an untouchable 74-game winning streak in 2004 before being named the "Greatest of All Time" in a primetime tournament earlier this year — will appear as an on-air presenter for select categories.
Jennings will also be a part of the Jeopardy! crew behind-the-scenes as a consulting producer, where he will "assist with contestant outreach, and serve as a general ambassador for the show," according to a new statement from Sony Pictures Television, the program's production company.
The upcoming season, the show's 37th, will mark the second filmed since Trebek was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2019. This past July, Trebek celebrated his 80th birthday by sharing an update on his health and releasing his memoir, The Answer Is…: Reflections on My Life.
At the time, Trebek said, "I'm doing well, I'm continuing my treatment and it is paying off, though it does fatigue me a great deal."
He added, "I can't wait to return to the studio and start recording shows for the new season in September."
